It would be easy to make a male-female relationship joke about this artwork. However, this being from 1956, I think there is something deeper going on here. Notice how the woman is dressed — especially the babushka-type headscarf — along with her facial expression and the stiff pointing of her arm and finger toward a piece of machinery. Looks like something straight out of an old Soviet propaganda poster, doesn’t it?

I believe this is a subliminal attempt by Western Auto — in cooperation with the FBI and U.S. Chamber of Commerce, of course — to show how Communism sought to enslave the American male into constant work for the state instead of allowing him the freedom to go fishing, drink beer, and scratch his nuts in peace by a nice, cool lake. Thank God we won the Cold War and flooded the country with cheap immigrant labor so we don’t have to mow our own lawns anymore! USA! USA! USA!
