The glorious Kapu-Kai sat for many years on the north side of Foothill Boulevard (U.S. Route 66) even though it was only open from 1962 through 1969. A flood in ’69 damaged the property so badly that the business closed. With nobody ever figuring out how to rescue the building in a financially sensible manner, it was finally torn down in 1994. Its lot now hosts a standard, boring shopping center anchored by an Albertson’s supermarket.
