Atlantic was one of the few companies to come out of the breakup of the Standard Oil Trust that decided to not take the option of continuing to use the "Standard" name. Centered in Philadelphia and starting with Pennsylvania and Delaware as its territory, the company expanded along the entire eastern coast of the United States mostly through acquisition of smaller companies. Atlantic wanted to become a national presence and succeeded in 1966 by merging with Los Angeles-based Richfield Oil to become ARCO. Oddly enough, ARCO is now back to being mostly a regional brand only seen in the far western states under its current co-ownership under Tesoro and BP.
