Jazz Casual was a show produced by Ralph J. Gleason, a man who went on to be as influential in pop and rock as he was in jazz. The program was shown nationally over National Educational Television (NET), the predecessor of PBS.
This episode seems to have the only video recordings currently available clearly showing the great Vince Guaraldi in action (Guaraldi also appered in the 1962 episode featuring blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon and saxophonist Ben Webster but is hardly shown in full on camera). With Fred Marshall on bass and Jerry Granelli on drums, this is the same trio that so much of North America knows and loves from A Charlie Brown Christmas.
In 1963 – the same year from which this clip comes – Guaraldi, Marshall, and Granelli were joined by legendary Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete to record Vince Guaraldi, Bola Sete and Friends. The tune performed in this clip, Star Song, appears on that album.
