The Ocean Highway (spelled "Hiway" on the map above) was unusual for a couple of reasons. First, with very few exceptions, the old "auto trail" promotional associations had gone away many years previously, most not long after the introduction of the U.S. Numbered Highway System. Second, unlike the other U.S. Highways and certainly the Interstate Highway System which had just begun construction two years before this map was published, the Ocean Highway was an intentionally slow and indirect route meant for pleasure and relaxation.
